COURSE OVERVIEW
Stories have shaped human interaction for as long as we have been able to communicate with one another. This course is a short introduction into modes of studying literature that are practiced in rigorous educational institutions.
The basic capacities of character examination and understanding conflict are essential to any serious study of literature. Therefore, this session will prepare fundamental analytical tools which they will carry with them into future courses.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
Understand varied forms of storytelling and distinguish their goals and characteristics
Build and Enhance the basic skills of academic writing
Introduce and Practice the norms and behaviors essential to strong, collaborative discussion
Contemplate the importance and variety of different literary genres
Grow, maintain, and utilize vocabulary surrounding the study of literature and academic discourse
ENDURING UNDERSTANDINGS
Students will become stronger readers, capable of gleaning and identifying key elements of a variety of literary works.
The study of characters and their interactions engenders a sense of personal reflection about our own personalities and relationships
As participants in constructive dialogue, students will practice and understand how collaboration functions within a group
Reading for pleasure will be emphasized and students will be given time for reflection and curiosity concerning the works we approach.
